Netflix internalizes its translation services
The company produces and distributes more and more
audiovisual content every year. Five years ago, this content was only
available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Since then, Netflix's growth
has led it to incorporate more than 20 languages, offering translations
into Chinese,Korean or Polish.
The recruitment process was previously outsourced through
translation service providers.However, the company explains on its
blog that "each of these providers
recruits, qualifies and evaluates its translators differently, so it is almost
impossible for Netflix to maintain a standard on all of these to
ensure consistency of quality and reliability needed to continue our
international growth. »
In a nutshell,
Netflix could assess the overall quality of a translation company's work, but
not the individual performance of each subtitle translator.
A platform to recruit translators of professional subtitles
To address the problem, Netflix is internalizing its
recruitment of subtitle translators. They will now have to apply directly
via the HERMES platform.
Via this platform,
applicants are required to take a test of one and a half hours. It has 5
steps, presented in the form of QCM and writing after watching videos. The
results will be sent to you in 10 working days.
The test is not for bilinguals but for more experienced
translators. Candidates will have to prove their ability to translate
English idioms into their native language, be able to identify technical errors
and work on subtitles. In a previous operation, Netflix had selected 200
translators out of 5,000 applicants.
